HIV Street Medicine | The Last Mile
The Solution to Ending the HIV Epidemic.
It’s no longer a question of science but of access. HIV Street Medicine transforms HIV care by embedding prevention and treatment into mobile, community-based street medicine teams that meet patients on sidewalks, in encampments, at reentry centers, and in rural areas.
HIV Street Medicine provides a powerful national pathway to bring equitable HIV prevention and treatment directly to people who need it most.
The United States has the technical capacity and infrastructure to end the HIV epidemic (EHE). HIV prevention and treatment modalities are highly effective. Federal and state initiatives have expanded access to whole person care, care coordination, and community- based services.
Yet the Epidemic Persists.
Antiretroviral therapy and PrEP are highly effective, but without equitable delivery through models like HIV Street Medicine, too many people remain out of reach.
In 2022, about 31,800 people acquired HIV in the U.S., only a 12% drop since 2018.
Disparities Remain
Black/ African Americans accounted for 37% (11,900) of new cases
Hispanics/Latinos 33% (10,500), despite smaller population shares
Nearly half of new cases occur in the South. Adults 25–34 make up the largest share (37%)
This is the Last Mile
If HIV care does not reliably reach people living outside clinic walls, sustained national viral suppression cannot be achieved. Ongoing gaps drive preventable transmission, avoidable emergency and inpatient utilization, and long-term public health costs.
HIV and Homelessness
THE END IS IN SIGHT
We have the tools to end the HIV Epidemic. Do we have the will to deliver them?
Street medicine reaches the people clinics never will delivering HIV prevention and treatment right where they live.
An AIDS-free generation is within reach. Getting there is a policy and funding choice, not a scientific one.
